Blend Sangiovese 50%, Syrah 27%, Cabernet Sauvignon 23%
Region Napa Valley, California, USA
Vineyard This wine is about innovation and discovery. For that reason, we go out of our way to find unusual vineyards and uncommon varietals. The Sangiovese is from older plantings in the center of Mendocino County. The bold Syrah is from the unlikely location of Tehama in Northern California. Cabernet Sauvignon from Lodi rounds out this blend.
Winemaking Each varietal is treated individually, traditionally fermented and barrel aged. The separate ‘elevage’ of these varieties allows development of their individuality. It also allows us lots of time to experiment with different blends and careful lot selection. They say that the whole is often greater than the sum of its parts, that’s certainly true for this wine. The basic structure of this blend’s backbone comes from the Syrah. Complimenting tannins arrive with the addition of Cabernet Sauvingon. Sangiovese brings suppleness, deep blueberry, and juicy red fruit to the blend. In combination, these wines create more than you would expect.
The Lunatic Red is overflowing with flavors of blueberry and blackberry. This wine has great density, richness, and complexity, owing to the fact that potent components are blended to magnify their individual contribution. You will taste notes of cedar spice from barrel aged Syrah and lush tannins from Cabernet Sauvignon. Sangiovese lends a burst of black fruits to give a long, enticing finish of blackberry jam. You will taste the unexpected.
